The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words so that the next generation could be able to read them. However, many words were being replaced with foreign ones, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Toto's early history that began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic expansion. In the beginning, Toto made products to meet the demands for modern, new urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own range of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's market share.
In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company employed the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto has been able to continue to innovate on the toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than standard models.
The company's first museum opened in 2015 and features exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their development, its group companies (all that deal with ceramics), historical background of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum houses the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name as evocative as Asia you'd think that the group would be prog queens and kings but they're actually a fairly straightforward rock group. The band started out as a quartet and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a variety of musical backgrounds, their biggest success was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on the position with the order "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to give it. Luckily for Toto, they did, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into your. The album also includes some more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and sounds totally wrong, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes changed towards the negative. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band still was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour in support of the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
